Vehicle Tablet Size Guide: 7, 8, 10 or 12 Inches

Size is the first specification and the worst one to choose from a catalogue photo. Choose it in the cab, with the software open.

Four PDS terminals of different sizes together
The full spread: 7, 8, 10 and 12.1 inches in one family.

The rule underneath every size decision

A vehicle tablet has one job at the glass: show the information the driver needs, at the size the driver can use, without blocking the view of the work. Every size in the range is a different answer to that sentence. Seven inches answers it for one information zone — a guidance line, a rate, a job. Eight inches answers it for a main screen in a compact cab. Ten inches answers it for two zones side by side — guidance plus implement, map plus camera. Twelve inches answers it for genuine split-screen work in a big cab. Choose by counting the zones your software shows at once, then check the winner against the physical cab; both tests must pass.

Size by size, with the failure modes named

The 7-inch failure mode is crowding: software designed for a desktop squeezed onto a small panel, and drivers zooming instead of driving. The 8-inch failure mode is ambition — asking it to split into zones it cannot hold. The 10-inch failure mode is mounting: a 275 mm housing placed where it eats a sight line in a mid-size cab. The 12-inch failure mode is the same, larger. Against those, weigh the benefits in the same order: front-key compactness at 7, balance at 8, the implement-control sweet spot at 10, and split-screen calm at 12. Every model in the range lists the same brightness and sealing figures — 750 cd/m2 and IP66 in its specification — so size really is a pure question of information and space.

  • 7 inch: one information zone, compact cabs, front keys
  • 8 inch: the main-screen size for compact machinery
  • 10 inch: two zones — guidance plus implement or camera
  • 12.1 inch: split-screen work in large cabs
  • Mock the footprint with cardboard before ordering
  • Count software zones first; measure the cab second; both must pass

The two ends of the size range

For vehicle tablet sizing, the T7 brings a 7" IPS, 1024 x 600, brightness 750 cd/m2 or higher, viewing angle 170 degrees or wider, fully laminated multi-touch and runs Android 10 or Linux 4.9 with QT5 on 64-bit quad-core Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz (the product page notes the chip passed the AEC-Q100 test). Its positioning fit is Multi-constellation GNSS covering BDS B1I/B1C, GPS L1 C/A, GLONASS L1OF, Galileo E1 and QZSS/SBAS; time to first fix under 30 seconds in open sky; CEP under 2 m in open sky; optional UNICORE UM982 RTK module, and the interface side reads: Front function keys (five definable buttons); expansion through the rear connector set described in the full specification sheet. That is why it appears in this shortlist: the combination matches the data and connections this work actually uses, in a housing specified for 9-36 V DC input (ISO 7637-II); IP66 sealing; operating temperature -20 to +70 C; MIL-STD-810 vibration; ISO 16750 shock; 95% non-condensing humidity.

For vehicle tablet sizing, the T12 brings a 12.1" IPS, 1280 x 800, brightness 750 cd/m2 or higher, fully laminated multi-touch and runs Android 13.0, or Linux kernel 5.15 with QT 5.15 (optional) on 64-bit octa-core Cortex-A55 at 1.8 GHz. Its positioning fit is GPS + BeiDou module (optional fit); RTK module UM982 (optional), and the interface side reads: 26-pin connector plus four 4-pin aviation connectors for 1080p cameras; standard expansion of 2 x CAN, 2 x RS232, 1 x RS485, 1 x 100M Ethernet and 1 x GPIO. That is why it appears in this shortlist: the combination matches the data and connections this work actually uses, in a housing specified for 9-36 V DC input (ISO 7637-II); IP66 sealing; operating temperature -20 to +70 C.

Settling your size in one afternoon

Screenshot your application's working screen, print it at the four panel sizes, and sit in the driver's seat with each print. The exercise takes an hour and ends most size arguments permanently. Then send the winning size and your vehicle list to the sales team, and confirm model, minimum order quantity and lead time.

Ask about help settling your terminal size

Send your vehicle, software and interface list. The sales team replies with a configuration and price.
